Lash Lift Aftercare: The First 24-48 Hours (and How to Make It Last)

Short answer: wait a full 24 hours after a keratin lash lift before you shower, steam, sweat, or splash water on your face. The lifting solution keeps working after you leave the studio, and the new curl needs that window to finish setting into the hair. Get them wet too early and you can relax the curl right back out. The lashes won’t be damaged — but the lift drops, and you paid for a lift.

After that first 24 hours you’re mostly in the clear. Shower normally, wash your face, go to the gym, get in the pool. The next 24 to 48 hours are about being gentle rather than being careful: no oil-based cleansers, no lash curler, no sleeping face-down in your pillow. Do that much and a well-done keratin lash lift holds its shape for six to eight weeks — the full natural growth cycle of the lash.

Why the first 24 hours matter so much

A lash lift isn’t a curler and it isn’t glue. It’s a two-step chemical process: the first solution softens the bonds inside the lash so the hair can be reshaped over a silicone shield, and the second solution locks those bonds back down in the new shape. That second step is chemistry, and chemistry takes time to finish. For the first day, the bonds are set but still settling.

Water is the main culprit

Water is what re-softens a freshly set curl. That includes the shower, the sink, the ocean, your kid’s water balloon, and crying at a movie. One quick splash isn’t a catastrophe — but repeated wetting in that first day is the single most common reason a lift looks flat by the weekend.

Steam counts as water

This one surprises people. A long hot shower, a sauna, a steam room, leaning over a boiling pot of pasta — steam is just water with more enthusiasm. Skip all of it for the first day. Clients coming from Smithtown and Commack often book on their way home from work for exactly this reason: get the appointment done in the evening, sleep on it, and the 24-hour clock is basically over by the time you’re back in the shower the next morning.

Hands off

No rubbing, no pinching, no “just checking if they’re still curled.” Touching a setting lash is how you end up with three lashes pointing the wrong direction. Look, don’t touch.

How long after a lash lift can I shower? The practical version

Twenty-four hours from the end of your appointment. Not from when you woke up, not from when you got home — from when you got out of the chair.

If life genuinely doesn’t allow that (a workout you can’t move, a wedding, a long drive back to Northport in July), here’s the workaround we give clients: shower with your back to the spray, keep the water lukewarm rather than hot, keep the bathroom door open so steam escapes, and don’t let shampoo or conditioner run down your face. It’s not perfect, but it’s far better than a 20-minute steam bath.

After the 24-hour mark, showering is completely normal. You do not need to protect them forever. That’s the whole appeal of a lift — it’s low-maintenance by design.

Days 2 through 7: the gentle window

The curl is set, but the lashes have been through a chemical process and the hair is a little more porous than usual for the first week. Small habits make a real difference here.

Watch your cleanser

Oil is the enemy of a lift’s longevity. Oil-based cleansers, cleansing balms, heavy eye creams, and most makeup-remover wipes will slowly soften the curl at the base. Switch to a gentle water-based or foaming cleanser for the first week and keep rich creams below the brow bone. If you use a retinol or an oil serum at night, apply it with your fingertips well away from the lash line.

Mascara — yes, but not waterproof

You can wear mascara after 24 hours. Most people find they don’t want to, which is the point. If you do, use a regular washable formula. Waterproof mascara requires an oily remover and aggressive rubbing to get off, and that combination is how a beautiful lift turns into a tired one by week three. And never, ever use a mechanical lash curler on lifted lashes — it can crimp the hair right where it’s already been reshaped.

Sleeping

Face-down sleeping flattens one side. If you’re a stomach sleeper, try a silk pillowcase and aim for your side for the first few nights. It won’t undo the lift, but you’ll get a more even result across both eyes.

Making it last the full six to eight weeks

The lift lasts as long as the lash does. Your natural lashes shed and regrow on a roughly six-to-eight-week cycle, so what you’re really doing is stretching the good weeks as far as they’ll go.

Brush them daily with a clean spoolie — morning, before makeup, one gentle upward sweep. It keeps the fan even and stops lashes from crossing as they grow out. A conditioning lash serum (peptide or castor-oil-free formulas play nicest with lifts) keeps the hair flexible so it doesn’t go brittle at the tips. And be careful with tanning sprays, heavy sunscreens, and pool chlorine in August — all three will fade a lash tint faster than they’ll drop the curl, so if your lashes look lighter before they look straighter, that’s normal.

You can see how the curl actually reads on different lash lengths and eye shapes in our gallery. Short, straight lashes usually get the most dramatic transformation; long lashes get lift and definition rather than a big curl.

When to call us

Mild sensitivity or slight puffiness right after the service can happen and typically settles within a few hours. But if you have persistent redness, itching, watering, or the curl looks noticeably uneven once it’s dry, get in touch. A lift that’s been over-processed or under-processed is fixable in a lot of cases, and we’d rather look at it than have you guess. Reach us through our contact page or just call the studio.

What it costs and when to rebook

Across Long Island, a keratin lash lift with tint typically falls in the range you’d expect for a specialty lash service — usually somewhere between about $95 and $175 depending on the studio, the technician’s experience, and whether tint is included. We’re not the cheapest option in Suffolk County and we’re not trying to be; a lift is done on your own lashes and there’s no undo button. For our exact pricing, current promotions, and what’s included with a lash lift at our Huntington Village studio, call (631) 458-7025 or book online for exact pricing.

Most clients rebook every six to eight weeks. Sooner than five weeks and you’re processing lashes that are still holding a curl, which is unnecessary stress on the hair. If you’re driving in from Melville, Dix Hills, or Kings Park, booking your next appointment before you leave is the easiest way to keep the cycle on schedule — our lash calendar fills up first.

Lash lift aftercare FAQ

Can I shower 12 hours after a lash lift?

We’d rather you didn’t. Twelve hours is inside the window where warm water and steam can still relax the curl. If you truly have no choice, keep your back to the spray, use lukewarm water, and keep the shower short — then avoid water entirely for the rest of the 24 hours.

Can I wear mascara after a lash lift?

Yes, after the first 24 hours — just make it a washable formula, not waterproof. Waterproof mascara needs oil-based remover and rubbing to get off, and that combination shortens the life of your lift more than anything else on this list.

How long does a keratin lash lift last?

Six to eight weeks for most people, which matches the natural lash growth cycle. The tint usually fades before the curl does, so if your lashes look lighter at week four, that’s the tint, not the lift.

Can I get a lash lift and a brow service on the same day?

Absolutely, and most of our clients do. A lash lift pairs naturally with brow lamination or a brow wax and facial in one visit. If you’re also considering lip blushing, we’d schedule that separately — that one has its own aftercare timeline. Ask when you book and we’ll build the appointment around your day.
